Since the time Sir John Charnley, the father of hip replacement surgery, relied on Howorth’s expertise to develop the original Laminar Flow System for Orthopedic  Operating Rooms, Howorth has become a leader in clean air and containment systems for the Medical, Pharmaceutical and Industrial markets. The current ExFlow 90 System is the third generation UCV system developed by Howorth-Airtech Ltd.

The performance of the Howorth ExFlow 90 UCV (Ultra Clean Ventilation) system is determined by patented design characteristics. The unique graded air flow has a greater velocity in the central area, reducing concentrically to the perimeter where it turns radially outwards from beneath the partial walls to be captured by the high level integral air return ducts.

This airflow profile is termed "EXPONENTIAL" and is exclusive to the Howorth ExFlow 90, which prevents entrapment of contaminated air and creates a clean zone larger than its diffuser area, giving protection over instrument tables in addition to the immediate surgical area.

STANDARD FEATURES

EXPONENTIAL AIRFLOW DESIGN ExFlow's uniquely graded airflow generates a larger clean zone without peripheral entrainment.

BACKGROUND LIGHTING Color corrected perimeter luminaries are built into the ExFlow canopy to give illumination to a level in excess of 500 lux in the clean zone.

INTEGRAL FANS Four individually controlled centrifugal fans in the ExFlow canopy provide 500 air changes per hour within the clean zone.

ACOUSTIC INSULATION The fan chambers and the supply and return airways are lined with acoustic foam to ensure quiet operation.

HEPA FILTRATION Final HEPA filters are 99.997% efficient to 0.3 microns.

PRE-FILTERS The return air inlets are protected by 80% efficient disposable pre-filters to remove lint and extend the life of the HEPA filters.

FILTER GAUGE A magnehelic gauge is fitted in the ExFlow to provide an indication of filter change requirement.

OPERATING ROOM CONTROL PANEL A low voltage wall control panel is installed in the operating room for direct control of airflow, body exhaust, audio and lighting systems.

SAFETY ALARM SYSTEM Automatic audio/visual alarm in the control panel gives indication of a system malfunction. Additional alarms are fitted to the main power distribution panel and the failure indicators can be interfaced with the building automated system (B.M.S.).

POWER CONTROL PANEL The main control panel includes the fan speed controllers, circuit breakers, low voltage control transformer, control and power wiring for the body exhaust and audio systems, convenience outlets and operating lamp.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION The ExFlow is manufactured in four modules to ensure access through a standard doorway to facilitate retro-fit installation. OPTIONAL FEATURES

BODY EXHAUST SYSTEM (BEX) The Howorth BEX system consists of two pendants, each incorporating four individual suction hose connectors with self-closing valves and a sound attenuated exhaust fan unit, remotely located with connection to the ExFlow by ductwork.

MEDICAL GAS PENDANTS Two service pendants can be mounted beneath the ExFlow incorporating medical gas, vacuum and air outlets and electrical power sockets.

BEX EXHAUST GOWNS Specially designed bacteria occlusive gowns with either Charnley helmet or Howorth necklace exhaust options.

SURGICAL LIGHTING A selection of aerodynamically designed high intensity operating lamps is offered for installation beneath the ExFlow.

INTERCOM AUDIO SYSTEM An eight band audio system is available for use with the Charnley helmet BEX system.

REMOTE FAN ExFlow For installations in new buildings or where space permits, the ExFlow is offered with a single remote fan unit.

TURNKEY SERVICE A comprehensive turnkey service provides single source responsibility for design, construction management, mechanical and electrical installation, air conditioning modifications, room fit-out and system commissioning.

MAINTENANCE SERVICE A maintenance contract is available with factory trained engineers providing service visits to verify system integrity and performance and to replace filters as required.
